In India, a tragic crash occurred involving an Air India plane, which went down shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport. There were at least 242 people on board, including passengers and crew. The aircraft was headed to the United Kingdom, specifically to London’s Gatwick Airport.
After taking off at 13:38 local time, the plane transmitted an emergency signal, then lost contact and crashed into a residential area within five minutes, striking a medical dormitory.
Rescue teams recovered over a hundred bodies from the wreckage, with police initially stating that no one likely survived the crash, though they later mentioned that two people might have lived through it. Authorities eventually confirmed one survivor seated at 11A. Victims also included residents of the student dormitory that was hit by the aircraft. Reuters reported that the overall death toll rose to 290, while The New Indian Express even mentioned 317. The cause of the accident remains unknown.
On board were ten crew members, two pilots, and 230 passengers, most of whom were from India and Great Britain, along with some from Portugal and Canada. Among these were 217 adults, eleven children, and two infants. According to available information, there were no Czech citizens on board.
This tragedy is one of the deadliest aviation accidents in India in recent times and has raised serious questions about flight safety in the region.
