Accident involving Mayor Pavel Novotný on the D4 motorway

Pavel Novotný was driving a red car pulling a caravan marked with the Řeporyje district logo. Both the police and Novotný himself stated that the accident was caused by excessive speed, which led to the caravan swaying and eventually tipping onto its side. Novotný’s children and a friend were also in the car – no one was injured.

"As the swaying got worse, I tried every known trick – accelerating, holding the steering wheel, everything. But when I realized that it wasn't working, I woke the children up. I glanced in the left mirror and managed it in such a way that no one got hurt," Novotný recounted the course of the accident

At the scene, the police conducted a breathalyzer test for alcohol and a drug test, both of which came back negative. Novotný confirmed that he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident.

During the investigation, police discovered that Pavel Novotný was driving without authorization. Since January 2024, his driver’s license had been suspended because he did not secure a new one after the ban ended. Novotný stated that he was unaware of the need to reactivate his license and resumed driving normally once the ban was over. The police are treating the matter as an offense rather than a criminal act.

The accident occurred at a time when Pavel Novotný is under heightened media scrutiny following a final court decision that converted his suspended sentence into a mandatory one. The mayor is set to serve three months in prison for repeated offenses during his probation period. Novotný announced that he plans to step down as mayor, although he wishes to remain on the council.

Thus, the accident has added another complication to the already complex situation of Pavel Novotný, who has been closely monitored not only by the media but also by authorities in recent weeks.
