Tragic accident near Kestřany: a female driver crashed into a power pole and died at the scene

All components of the integrated rescue system responded at the scene, including ground crews of the emergency medical service and the helicopter of the South Bohemian Region air rescue service.  “The woman was unconscious when rescuers arrived and suffered a failure of vital functions. Rescuers immediately began advanced resuscitation care,” said Petra Kafková, spokeswoman for the South Bohemian rescue service.  Despite intensive resuscitation, the driver could not be saved and the doctor at the scene pronounced death.  The helicopter therefore returned from the scene without a patient.

The circumstances and causes of the accident are now being investigated by traffic police from Písek.  “The driver of a Citroën was traveling from Kestřany toward Zátaví. For reasons still unknown, the vehicle left the roadway and slid into a roadside ditch, where it struck an electricity pole,” described police spokeswoman Kamila Čušínová Ingrišová.  A breath test for the driver was not possible given her injuries, so the police ordered an autopsy and examination of the samples taken. The road was partially closed for the duration of the rescuers' response and the accident investigation, and police diverted traffic and ran shuttles.  Energy company crews were also called to the scene; they inspected the damaged power lines and secured them.  No one else was injured in the accident; the driver was traveling alone in the vehicle.

According to the police, the stretch between Kestřany and Zátaví is one of the less frequented roads, yet drivers must expect a narrower carriageway and worsened conditions, especially in winter.  Investigators will determine whether speed, possible inattention, a medical indisposition, or the road condition at the time contributed to the accident.  The tragic event is another reminder of how fatal the consequences can be even from an apparently short departure from the roadway.
