Preventive action against meningitis among hotel guests in Roztoky near Prague triggered panic
© AKTU.cz, Jakub Forman Suspicion of meningitis among dozens of people in a student dormitory triggered actions in Roztoky near Prague at one of the accommodation facilities. This was a preventive measure related to the earlier hospitalization of a foreign student, after which four other individuals who had been in close contact with him ended up in the hospital. According to AKTU.cz, one of the patients was even reported to have died.
The operation was precautionary to prevent the illness from spreading among other students and hotel guests.
"We are currently monitoring about 80 individuals, and an investigation is underway," stated Monika Nováková, a spokesperson for the Central Bohemian emergency services, to Novinkám.cz after 10:00 PM on Monday, noting that this is suspected to be type B meningitis.
Paramedics and police were in protective gear. A wide area was cordoned off. The accommodation facility on Tyršovo Square serves as university housing during the year and, in the summer, it mainly hosts international exchange students.
Health workers examined dozens of residents for any signs of infection and traced contacts related to the so-called "zero patient" – the first infected individual from whom further contacts can be mapped. Shortly before 2:00 AM, it was confirmed that everyone tested was fine, and the operation concluded. Fortunately, the paramedics reported that no one was in immediate danger.
More detailed information is expected to be provided at a press conference by the Ministry of Health.
