Frost grips the Czech Republic
Mráz na Snežce
© AKTU.czIn the Czech Republic, freezing winter weather continues with clear to partly cloudy skies and only isolated precipitation; in the coming days, frosts lasting all day are expected and a gradual slight warming toward the end of the week. January as a whole should be close to the long-term temperature average, with more frequent frosts especially in the first half of the month.
Current conditions
- In the morning temperatures are generally well below zero, in frost hollows even below -10 °C.
- The sky is mostly clear to partly cloudy, with freezing fog in places, mainly in Bohemia.
- Most of the area is dry; any precipitation will be light snow and occur only locally.Forecast for today and tomorrow
- Today: Clear to partly cloudy, temporarily increased cloudiness in places, isolated freezing fog. Daytime highs around -6 to -1 °C, in the mountains around -8 °C.
- Night: Clearing; temperatures will fall to -7 to -12 °C, and with snow cover and calm winds down to around -14 °C.
- Tomorrow: Continued frosty conditions, mostly clear to partly cloudy, daytime highs again roughly between -6 and -1 °C.Outlook for the week
- In the first half of the week widespread daytime frosts will persist; morning lows often below -7 °C, afternoons around -5 to -2 °C.
- In the second half of the week it will temporarily warm up; highs may reach around zero or slightly above, especially over the weekend (around 0 to 3 °C).
- Precipitation will be scarce; occasional snow is expected mainly in connection with weak frontal passages, and a significant snowfall in lowlands does not appear likely.Longer-term outlook for January
- Models indicate the first half of January will be frequently below-average cold, with many frosty and locally icy days (highs remaining below freezing).
- Toward mid-month a short-lived milder spell may occur, with highs rising slightly above zero, after which temperatures should return closer to normal.
- Overall January should be roughly average in temperature and average to slightly below-average in precipitation, so significantly above-normal snow amounts in the lowlands are not expected.Recommendations for people traveling
- Expect black ice and freezing patches, especially in the mornings and evenings, even on roads that appear dry.
- In mountainous areas winter equipment remains advisable – winter tires, chains and warm clothing; for longer trips bring hot drinks and a blanket in the car.
- Because of severe frosts, protect equipment and your home (ensure water in cars doesn't freeze, protect water meters, and avoid airing out for too long).
